A/Prof. Michael Denton

Michael was born, raised, and schooled in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated with honours from University of Melbourne’s Medical Faculty and completed surgical training at Prince Henry’s Hospital.

Michael spent three post fellowship years working in the United Kingdom. He commenced his rotation at Newcastle’s Department of Vascular Surgery, before moving to Durham Hospital. He concluded his fellowship as the Senior Registrar in Vascular Surgery in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire Vascular Dept.). He returned to Melbourne as a Vascular Surgeon and began working at Prince Henry’s Hospital, Moorabbin Hospital and the Western Hospital in Footscray.

In 1991, Michael transferred to St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne to establish the Endovascular Surgery Department within the existing Vascular Department. He became Chief of Vascular Surgery at both St Vincent’s and Epworth Hospitals. He was involved in the Australian Vascular Society as a Board Member for eight years, acted as an Examiner, a Conference Convenor and finally the President of the Australian Society of Vascular Surgery from 2005 to 2006.

Michael was involved in the development and pioneering of endovascular technical procedures for arterial reconstruction and later for aneurysm surgery. He is strongly involved in training junior vascular surgeons as well as local and international surgeons. He continues to travel extensively throughout Australia and internationally in this teaching and mentoring role. He was appointed Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) surgical traveler to China in 2006 and additionally as a Singapore Health Ministerial Guest in 2007.

Michael has a focus in developing minimally invasive methods of repairing abdominal and thoracic aneurysm disease. He also has strong interest in an extensive range of vascular surgery procedures which include; varicose vein / recurrent varicose vein surgeries, lower limb bypass/ re-vascularisation surgery, carotid surgery, diabetic foot disease as well as popliteal entrapment surgery.
